    Review:
The Bic Mechanical Mentals have become an essential part of my everyday writing arsenal. As someone who values reliability and durability in their stationery, these mechanical pencils have exceeded my expectations.

First and foremost, the build quality of these pencils is top-notch. The metal barrel provides a reassuring weight and sturdiness, making them feel more substantial than other plastic alternatives. This durability ensures that they can withstand the rigors of daily use without any issues.

The 0.7mm lead size is perfect for both writing and sketching, offering a balance between precision and durability. The lead advances smoothly with each click, eliminating the need for constant sharpening and ensuring a consistent writing experience.

I also appreciate the eraser functionality at the top of the pencil. While it’s not the largest eraser, it gets the job done for quick corrections and edits on the fly. Plus, the convenient refillable eraser design means I can easily replace it when needed, extending the lifespan of the pencil.

One of the standout features of these mechanical pencils is their affordability. Despite their high-quality construction, they are priced competitively, making them accessible to students, professionals, and artists alike.

Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the Bic Mechanical Mentals. They combine durability, functionality, and affordability into one sleek package, making them a must-have for anyone in need of reliable writing instruments. Whether you’re taking notes in class, sketching out ideas, or drafting documents, these pencils won’t let you down. Highly recommended!

I have a love/hate relationship with these Bic pencils. To begin with, I dislike the idea of buying a bunch of plastic semi-disposable pencils. You CAN refill them, but the leads often cost more than just buying new pencils, so that fact alone infuriates me on principle. I compared a package of 30 Bic lead refills to this package of 40 pencils and it came out to be over 2 1/2 times more expensive to buy the refills (given that each one of these pencils comes with 3 leads, so that’s 120 leads). But on this occasion, I really did need extra pencils anyway. I keep these in various locations and use them in the field and in all-weather conditions, so nice ones get lost, borrowed or ruined.

The main thing I like about these particular pencils is the lead. It’s fairly strong for 0.7mm and it’s fairly dark and crisp. I also like that they have clips, although I find the clips do break easily, for example, when I clip to them to my clipboard clamp. But for attaching to pages of a notebook or a thin pocket they’re fine. I also like that the barrels all look alike, with the exception of different color clips. I can’t stand reaching for a pencil and wondering if this one is lousy or if this one is decent, which happens when I buy different pencils from different brands that are all various colors.

One thing I really dislike about these pencils is the shape and manufacturing of the barrel design. The flat sides hurt my fingers, I much prefer a round pencil. Also, they’re manufactured with a noticeable seam that I can feel and it sometimes digs into my fingers. Maybe I have sensitive fingers or something, who knows, but it drives me nuts. Before I discovered pencil grips I’d actually sand the seams with fine grit sandpaper.

So, between my last purchase of these Bics and this most recent purchase, I went around to local Dollar Stores and bought some of their mechanical pencils, hoping to find something affordable but nicer to hold. I got two packs, each from a different store. One pack had lousy leads, very light/pale lead which broke easily. It had nice pencil grips, but lousy lead. The other package had surprisingly good and dark lead, but cheap, slippery grips. They’ve all just been sitting around because I can’t stand the idea of throwing them out. So I had an idea when I bought these Bics: I “parted out” my dollar store pencils. I took the good grips from the one batch, along with the matching erasers, and I’ll use the good leads from the other batch, and I’ll put all these onto the Bics!

The result is a better – and more fun looking Bic. See my photo. Note that the colorful grips and colorful erasers do not come with these pencils, but look how cool they are now, they match the Bic clips and everything. I’ll of course save the white Bic erasers as spares. As an added bonus, I also discovered that the dollar store erasers are significantly larger than the white big erasers. I’d say a good 3mm longer. This was really just a way to try to reuse materials that I wasted money on, but it turned out to be a legitimate upgrade to these Bics. Now the manufacturing seam and flat sides no longer bother me. And when I run out of leads I’m going to try and find some generic ones that are still dark, because paying more for refill leads than the actual pencils is still insanity no matter how nicely I dress these up.

Exactly what I needed. The eraser does erase cleanly and without any smudges or stray marks. The lead is perfect for writing small print math problems on college-ruled paper. Here is my lead breakdown:

0.3 mm – Perfect for writing as small as possible on note cards or note sheets for exams (cram as much information as possible on the permitted note medium). Difficulty: this thin diameter lead breaks with minimal pressure. I go through a lot of lead when writing exam note cards so this diameter is not recommended for regular use. This was a common size for engineering/drafting years ago.

0.5 mm – The lead size in this product. PERFECT for someone with decent hand pressure control or someone who has plenty of extra lead on hand. The pencil writes fine while still being sturdy enough for my creaky hand.

0.7 mm – Sturdy, but writes very mushy. Fine for writing words and doodling and probably acceptable for higher-level math on wide-ruled paper but gets a little “squishy” fitting equations on one line of college-ruled. I find myself frequently rotating the pencil or even intentionally breaking lead to try and find a sharper edge.

0.9 mm – Perhaps fine (and even preferred) for younger students but 0.7 mm is bad enough for higher-level math that I’d never use this lead.

I’ve included a photo that compares the 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.7 mm pencil leads (I do not own a 0.9 mm pencil) on standard college-ruled paper. The 0.5 mm example demonstrates a pencil from this set. The comparison should be enough to determine which thickness is right for you. I also erased and rewrote one of the numbers on this example, using the eraser of this particular product. As you can see, it erases very cleanly. See if you can guess what was erased!

Long story short: Excellent pencils with fine lead and quality erasers for CHEAP!

My high schooler prefers mechanical pencils to a standard pencil. We’ve discovered that not all are the same. First, many have a quite thin lead. They just break off constantly. These have a thicker lead so don’t have that problem. Some only come with one extra lead so after that’s used, they go in the trash. These have several extra leads included so again, superior to other brands. They are slightly more money than the cheap brands but for the quality/quantity of lead, they are definitely a better choice. Still very affordable.

Whether I’m working on intricate sketches, detailed math problems, or just jotting down notes, the mechanical pencils deliver a level of accuracy that traditional pencils can’t match. The lead advances with a satisfying click, eliminating the need for constant sharpening and allowing me to focus on the task at hand.

One of the standout features is the built-in eraser. The convenience of having an eraser right at the end of the pencil is a game-changer. No more searching for a separate eraser or smudging mistakes – the integrated eraser provides a quick and efficient way to make corrections without interrupting the flow of my work.

The mechanical pencils also shine in terms of customization. The adjustable lead hardness options cater to different preferences and writing styles. Whether you prefer a softer lead for smooth writing or a harder lead for precise lines, these pencils have you covered.

The versatility of these mechanical pencils extends beyond writing. The sleek design and compact size make them easy to carry around, ensuring that you’re always equipped for any writing task that comes your way. These are my kid’s favorite pencils. Apparently, they are also a favorite of their classmates because they are constantly giving away the pencils to friends. I’ve ordered them multiple times and never had an issue. My kids say they are the most comfortable. I’m sure I will end up ordering again.

These are the only pencil I use. The led is strong and dark, and perfect for drawing. The erasers are also quite clean and don’t smudge things, unlike some of those pink traditional pencil brands.
