I have had butterfly habitats before with my older kids, but my youngest didn’t remember them and I couldn’t find the ones I had. So, I chose Insect Lore again. I like that the caterpillars were included! It saved me the step of ordering online using the free voucher that is usually included. The caterpillars looked dead and I thought I really messed up. They were on the bottom, not moving, covered in some silky webs, which I was certain was their funeral shroud! But they all came around after a couple days! They ate most of the food in the container and made their little “transformer homes” at the top! When we moved the lids to the stands we hit a snag. The silky strands were attached to the side of the cup; so when I lifted the lid, a few chrysalises detached. We fetched a stick from outside and wrapped the silky strands around the stick to secure the chrysalises. All 10 butterflies hatched and were successfully released! Super fun! A great learning experience!

We raise butterflies each spring and this kit never disappoints (7 years). We all just watched the caterpillars turn into chrysalises!!! Normally they do this at night while we are sleeping – what a very special treat! Truly amazing and indescribable watching the progress of these beautiful and amazing creations! Wonderful fun for everyone. Happy spring everyone!! : ))

This includes anything and everything you need with simple, easy to follow instructions. Came in TWO days!! All the caterpillars were alive and are thriving. Will purchase again down the road. Our two year old has loved watching them change every day

We ordered this a few weeks ago because my 6yo has been super into butterflies. The kit comes with everything you’ll need and super detailed/easy to understand instructions. Our caterpillars are all in a chrysalis at this point, just waiting for them to emerge! We did have one caterpillar that was late to the game and kept eating food at the bottom instead of heading to the lid to hang. He stayed on the bottom and turned into a chrysalis there – rooting for him but a little worried about him, too. 😂

UPDATE: Every one of the butterflies emerged! We weren’t sure if they would because 3 of the chrysalides fell off the cup lid when we moved it, so they were on the floor of the tent. But they all emerged, we kept them for a few days, and my daughter loved releasing them! It did look like a murder scene after the butterflies emerged from the chrysalides though, so prepare yourself for that!!
*if you think they’re dead, just wait!* I admit that my initial impression of this was not good, as it appeared that all of the caterpillars were dead when the kit arrived. The stuff at the bottom of the cups was also brown and didn’t look good. I thought maybe they died in the crazy heat we were having. I set the whole box aside for a day or two and when I checked again, they had all made chrysalises! I didn’t show my daughter the kit until this point because I was sure they were dead, so unfortunately she missed part of the life cycle, but she was absolutely thrilled anyway! She’s named all of the chrysalises already and is using the journal that came with the kit to write her observations and draw pictures, etc. (she is 7 years old, by the way). She can’t wait for the butterflies to emerge! We’ll see if they do and if they survive, but so far this has been worth every penny.
Nature is significant –
Caterpillars grew exactly how the information packet said they would. Such a fun experience for adults and children. All 5 of my Caterpillars grew into beautiful butterflies and have since been freed into the wild. I will do this again. ( They even flew onto my hand as if to say thank you & goodbye) truly wonderful.

Bought the kit for my nature loving grandbaby. It was a great experience for the whole family. All 5 caterpillars transformed. Great instructions included. Our order came just in time for the butterflies to be released on Easter. Only thing we thought that could be improved was a front viewing panel on net. For taking pictures and for the kids to see better. Will definitely do again next year.

The five caterpillars made it through the mail just fine. I gave this as a gift to my daughter’s first grade class which also end up being a gift for her teacher who Is going through grief and loss of a loved one which the butterflies are seen as good luck and love and beauty in such a time of Grief and loss has brought a moment of peace for her. The first graders are having so much fun with the caterpillars and all the other first grade classes get to experience them two. So these five caterpillars get loved by so many children. Super fun gift to give and very memorable.

Only 4 Caterpillar survived the trip.
The nets really small. I was expecting bigger.
I also was expecting for the feeding tray and log to be a harder plastic and it’s not. It’s a plastic cheap material.
They came fast . I think a little pricy for the side of net and cheap product but 4 caterpillars are growing. I’m not going to give it below 4 stars because my daughter loves the journal she’s drawing and documenting in daily.

The butterfly kit arrived with 5 caterpillars in a container with their food. One caterpillar was behind the others and ulitmately did not survive into a butterfly. The process was very simple since observation of the caterpillars in their container was all there was to do for about a week. Four of the caterpillars climbed to the bottom of the lid and made what I call a cocoon. Once again, all there was to do for 3 days was to observe the cocoons. They hardened during that time. Once the 3 days passed, I lifted the lid and placed slid it into the slot of the provided plastic piece and place them in the provided habitat.. Observation was all there was to do. Then, after about 5 to 7 days, there were butterflies. One packet of sugar came with the kit, but the instructions said to use two packets of sugar with 1/3 cup of water to make nectar for the butterflies. Once made, a pipette was provided with the kit to draw up the water and to drop the sugar water onto a tiny sponge placed in a colorful plastic “flower” that was with the kit. I made fresh sugar every day, but that’s just me. In addition, I put a slice of orange and a slice of apple in the habitat. The butterflies may have smelled the fruit because they began fluttering around with excitement. My husband and I saw them “eating” the orange and apple, but they seemed to like the apple best. We saw two of the butterflies drinking the sugar water. We gave the butterflies an apple and an orange slice each day for three days. On the third day, after I was sure that they had a chance to eat, I took them outside to let them go. Two flew away within a minute or two. One sat on the plastic “flower” and drank and drank for several minutes. It flew away after five minutes or more. The fourth butterfly seems somewhat weak. It gets turned over easily and flaps around on its back. It didn’t seem to want to leave. It sat on the plastic “flower” for a good while and drank, then sat on the bottom of the habitat. I waited and waited, but it didn’t seem like it wanted to leave yet. I brought it back inside and will try again tomorrow. It’s been an interesting experience. I bought one for my sister before I purchased mine. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well. All five of her butterflies lived. A friend of mine bought one for her granddaughter, which is where I found out that amazon.com had the kits. Three of her butterflies lived. All of her family found it fascinating.
I would recommend this kit to anyone–young or old. It’s not a difficult project, but the process is fascinating and educational.
The kit came from California, and the painted lady butterflies are supposed to be all over America. All the pieces, except maybe one packet of sugar, were in the kit with five live caterpillars. The caterpillars didn’t move much the first day, and one seemed dead upon arrival; but all five ate and moved around within a day or so.
Great kit, great project, and wonderful experience.
